Gallery in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Photograph of the famous wooden statue of the official Kaaper (4th-5th dynasty, Cairo CG 34), commonly known as Sheik el-Beled. During excavations of his tomb at Saqqara, conducted by Mariette, the workers who unearthed this statue christened it with the name Sheikh-el-Beled, meaning “village chief” in Arabic due to its resemblance to a local village chief at the time.
